Item Response Theory

Many people do not realise that the GAMSAT is marked using a branch of psychometrics called Item Response Theory. Although this is a highly complex area of mathematics it is important for you as a candidate to appreciate the basics of what this means for your  preparation.

1.     Not all questions are assumed to have the same level of difficulty
2.     As such not all questions carry equal weighting towards your score.
3.     The probability of a correct response is a mathematical function of the person and certain parameters.
4.     These could for example include general intelligence or strength of particular attitudes.
5.     As such the examination can determine certain latent traits in candidates.

Understanding how this affects your approach to the examination is an important and integral part of all of our  courses. If you would like to know more contact us for our full prospectus at www.gamsat.co.uk.
